While AASHTO is this year celebrating its centennial, many of its committees and subcommittees were created years or decades after the organization's inception. However, the Standing Committee on Highways' Materials subcommittee will this summer hold its 100th meeting in Minneapolis.
The Materials subcommittee meeting, which this year will run Sunday, July 27 through Friday, August 1 at the Depot Renaissance Minneapolis Hotel, brings together materials engineers and technical experts from members departments to develop and maintain materials and test standards that are utilized by all state transportation departments. The meeting also encourages industry participation to introduce any innovative ideas for the transportation industry while also resolving any technical issues that may exist.
The meeting will include sessions on various AASHTOWare projects, pavement preservation, innovation programs such as the AASHTO Product Evaluation List and Technology Implementation Group, the Transportation Curriculum Coordination Council, AASHTO publications in the subcommittee's jurisdiction, and working sessions for the technical sections.
AASHTO's Subcommittee on Materials prepares, publishes, and updates: specifications for materials used in construction and maintenance of transportation facilities (including highways, bridges, and structures); specifications for standard methods of sampling and testing those materials incident to construction, maintenance and operation of those facilities; and information on the performance of special products evaluated by member departments. The Subcommittee on Materials is also responsible for monitoring and overseeing AASHTO's Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL).
